The heads of the opposition Social Democrats (SP) demanded a new general election Sunday on the occasion of their May Day rally in Vienna, DPA reported. About 110,000 people gathered on Vienna City Hall Square and applauded when SP leader Alfred Gusenbauer said that Austria deserved something better than the current government. According to Gusenbauer "(Chancellor Wolfgang) Schuessel and Co." were afraid of a new election, because the Austrian population would vote for the SP to be the new governing force. Vienna Mayor Michael Haeupl demanded that Schuessel should resign, which lead to another round of applause. After the rally - and joined by some hundred demonstrators - the heads of the SP moved a few hundred metres further to the Hofburg, where measures for the encouragement of employment were being discussed by the heads of the government, the social partners, the opposition and international experts such as E.U. Industry Commissioner Guenter Verheugen. --More 2334 Local Time 2034 GMT
