Zelenskyy calls Oval Office clash with Trump 'regrettable,' expresses readiness for peace under U.S. leadership
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 04 - 03 - 2025

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Tuesday described his heated exchange with U.S. President Donald Trump in the Oval Office as "regrettable," signaling his willingness to work with Trump to achieve a lasting peace.
Zelenskyy's remarks, posted on X, appeared to be an attempt to ease tensions following the contentious White House meeting last week.
His statement came just hours after the U.S. paused military aid to Ukraine, a move that has sparked concerns in Kyiv as the country continues its defense against Russia's invasion.
In an apparent response to Trump's criticisms that Ukraine is resistant to peace negotiations, Zelenskyy affirmed his country's commitment to diplomacy.
"None of us want an endless war," Zelenskyy wrote. "Ukraine is ready to come to the negotiating table as soon as possible to bring lasting peace closer. Nobody wants peace more than the Ukrainians. My team and I stand ready to work under President Trump's strong leadership to get a peace that lasts."
Acknowledging the tense nature of their Oval Office meeting, Zelenskyy admitted, "It did not go the way it was supposed to be. It is regrettable that it happened this way. It is time to make things right. We would like future cooperation and communication to be constructive."
Zelenskyy's statement came ahead of Trump's expected address to Congress, in which he is anticipated to further discuss U.S. policy toward Ukraine.
The decision to pause military aid has triggered unease in Kyiv, given its dependence on U.S. support in repelling Russian aggression.
Despite the uncertainty, Ukrainian officials expressed gratitude for Washington's previous support. However, they maintained that any peace deal must include security guarantees for Ukraine and reject Russian territorial claims—positions that could pose challenges in future negotiations.
Zelenskyy also reiterated Ukraine's willingness to sign a security and minerals deal with Washington, a move that could bolster bilateral ties.
"Regarding the agreement on minerals and security, Ukraine is ready to sign it at any time and in any convenient format," he stated. "We see this agreement as a step toward greater security and solid security guarantees, and I truly hope it will work effectively."
Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer spoke with Zelenskyy on Tuesday, reaffirming the UK's unwavering support for Ukraine and welcoming Kyiv's commitment to securing peace. — Agencies
