Clashes between political rivals marred May Day or Labour Day celebrations across Europe Sunday, reported the dpa. Police had arrested some 70 people by Sunday evening as 850 neo- Nazi marchers clashed with 4,000 counter-demonstrators in the German city of Leipzig. A force of 2,500 police officers was unable to guarantee the safety of the right-wing extremist marchers, so police broke the protest up early. In Nuremberg, two demonstrators were arrested when 5,000 turned out to protest a march by 300 neo-Nazis. There was more fighting between neo-Nazis and left-wing protestors in the town of Worms, also in Germany, but the capital Berlin was spared the usual level of violence it experiences on the May holiday. By Sunday morning, Berlin police had arrested 65 suspected rioters and a further 46 were ordered home. Three of the 1,000 police officers deployed in the city were injured. In neighbouring Austria, some 110,000 people gathered in Vienna's City Hall Square to hear Social Democrat leader Alfred Gusenbauer call for new elections to replace the current government. --more 2332 Local Time 2032 GMT
