JIZAN: Border Guard sea patrols were involved in the successful pursuit of two qat-smuggling fishing boats in separate incidents off the coast of Jizan Thursday. The first incident was prompted vessel that refused to slow down after it was observed traveling at a “crazy, dangerous speed”. When the captain ignored warnings and began dumping material in the sea as he attempted to speed off, officials set off in pursuit. The boat was found to be carrying a “large amount of qat”. In a similar incident a second boat was pursued and stopped off the Farasan islands. Officers found over 1,000 bundles of qat on board and the crew were detained and handed over to the relevant authorities.
