The Presidency of Meteorology and Environment PME celebrated today World Meteorological Day-2009 under the slogan of "weather, climate and the air we breathe" at its headquarters in Jeddah. All branches and offices of the PME in all regions and governorates of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia also joined in the celebration. Each year, on March 23, the World Meteorological Organization, its 188 Members and the worldwide meteorological community celebrate World Meteorological Day around a chosen theme. This Day commemorates the entry into force, on that date in 1950, of the WMO Convention creating the Organization. Subsequently, in 1951, WMO was designated a specialized agency of the United Nations System. Prince Turki bin Nasser bin Abdul Aziz, General President of Meteorology and Environment in a speech delivered by Saad Al Mehlafi, PME assistance secretary for Metrological Affairs said "The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia deals fully with the international community to exchange information, experiences and scientific research, studies, and it still plays its role in the development plans of the work of the PME and implementation of these plans at all levels national, regional and international. "The Kingdom is aware of all challenges and problems associated with the field of meteorological services in all WMO regions, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia worked in the development of its observation systems which are commensurate with the global developments in this area and has supported its centers spread in all regions with modern techniques that contribute to the accuracy of meteorological works," the Prince said.
