Today, March 23, is World Meteorological Day. This year the theme is “Weather, climate and the air we breathe.” The day is commemorated by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), its 188 members and the worldwide meteorological community to mark the date in 1950 of the WMO Convention that created the organization. Subsequently, in 1951, WMO was designated a specialized agency of the United Nations System. Saudi Arabia's General Presidency of Meteorology and Environment is an active partner in the international system in the field of meteorology, said PME's President Prince Turki Bin Nasser Bin Abdul Aziz, on the occasion. Saudi Arabia has well developed observation systems which are commensurate with global advances in this area, he said. Weather monitoring centers spread all over Saudi Arabia employ modern techniques that contribute to the accuracy of meteorological work, he said. “This was quite clear during the recent weather fluctuations when PME was able to provide the concerned local and global bodies with important initial information and warn them of the danger of sudden changes in the weather which had afflicted various regions,” he said.
