Saudi Arabia has been named a member of the intergovernmental panel on climate change – Group III during the 30th session of the IPCC held in Anatolia, Turkey, April 21-23. More than 170 countries participated in the session. The Kingdom's delegation was led by the Assistant to the President of the Presidency of Meteorology and Environment (PME) Sameer Bukhari, who is also Saudi Arabia's permanent representative to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The IPCC is a scientific intergovernmental body set up by the WMO and by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). Dr. Bukhari said the nominations come as a token of appreciation and acknowledgement of the continued efforts exerted by the Kingdom in meteorology and environmental protection and its effective contribution in the field. He noted that the participants reviewed the preparations and arrangements made by the member states to deal with climate changes and the future role of the panel besides preparations being made for the meeting which will be held in Copenhagen in December.
