At least 16 people died and 21 injured in road-related accidents in the northern Indian states of Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab on Friday, news reports said, according to dpa. A mini-bus carrying labourers fell into a deep gorge when the driver of the bus lost control, killing 10 people and injuring 17. The accident took place near Kargil, near the Line of Control, in northern state Jammu and Kashmir, about 250 kilometres north-east of state capital Srinagar, reported news agency PTI. Six persons were killed and four injured when a bus collided with a stone crusher near Patiala in the northern state Punjab, about 67 kilometres south-west of state capital Chandigarh. The drivers of both the vehicles were seriously injured, police told PTI. India has among the poorest road safety records in the world and registers the highest number of road fatalities after China.
