The death toll from a bus crash in Indian Kashmir rose to 42 on Friday as a number of those injured died overnight, police said. At least 40 others, including six children, remain in hospitals and police said the death toll from Thursday's accident would likely climb as several of the injured were in a critical condition, Reuters reported. The crash occurred when the steering locked and brakes failed, resulting in the overcrowded bus veering off a road and plunging into a 400-feet (122 metres) gorge, police said. "There were at least 85 passengers in the bus which had a capacity for 50," a police officer said. "Many people were sitting on the roof." The accident took place around 150 km (95 miles) northeast of Jammu city, the winter capital of the restive Himalayan region, and it took hours for rescuers to reach the site and climb down the gorge to the mangled vehicle.
