owned bus swerved off a mountain road and fell into a deep gorge Wednesday, killing 16 people near Pithorgarh, in north Indian state of Uttaranchal, a police official said. Fifteen other people were in the accident when the bus they were traveling in rolled down a 200-meter deep gorge and fell into a river, senior police official Kripal Meena said. The bus driver was among those killed, Meena said. The area is 450 kilometers northwest of Lucknow, capital of neighboring Uttar Pradesh state. Meena said 11 of the injured were in serious condition.
