Tokyo stocks surged Monday sending the Nikkei benchmark above 16,600 for the first time in six weeks on growing optimism, reported dpa. The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average soared 285.07 points, or 1.74 per cent, to close at 16,624.80. The broader Topix index of all first-section issues also gained 24.24 points, or 1.46 per cent, to close at 1,688.22. On currency markets at 3 p.m. (0600 GMT), the dollar was quoted at 116.21-24 yen, down from 116.72-74 yen at the same time Friday. The euro was quoted at 1.2168-71 dollars, slightly up from 1.2165-67 dollars at the same time Friday.
