The Tokyo stock market ended sharply lower on Friday, due to an overnight plunge on Wall Street and a recent deterioration of relationship with China, Japan's largest trade partner, traders said. The 225-issue Nikkei average ended at 11,370.69, down 192.48 points, or 1.66 per cent. The Nikkei finished at the lowest level since February 4. The Topix index of all first section issues shed 17.75 points, or 1.52 per cent, to stand at 1,150.67. At 3 p.m. (0600 GMT) the U.S. currency was quoted at 108.37-40 yen, up from 107.86-88 yen at the same time Thursday. The euro was quoted at 1.2795-98 dollars, down compared with 1.2876-78 Thursday.
