Security forces in India's portion of Kashmir have killed at least 17 suspected rebels, the Indian army said Saturday. The army intercepted and killed nine intruders after they entered the Indian-controlled portion of Kashmir in the Sumanval-Gulmarg region, army spokesman Lt. Col. V.K. Batra said. Four more suspected rebels were killed as they tried to cross the border near Keran, Batra said. Elsewhere in the region, security forces killed four suspected rebels in separate shootouts, he was quoted as saying by The Associated Press.
