A suicide bomber blew himself up outside a military camp in the Indian-controlled portion of Kashmir on Monday, while five other suspected rebels were killed in separate incidents, police said. The suicide bomber detonated grenades strapped to his body as he tried to force his way into the camp in Baramulla district of India's Jammu-Kashmir state, said Junaid Ahmad, a police officer. Four soldiers were wounded, Ahmad said. Baramulla is 55 kilometers (35 miles) north of Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu-Kashmir. Meanwhile, army soldiers killed a suspected rebel during a gunbattle in nearby Khumriyal village, he said. Soldiers also killed two rebels during a fierce gunbattle in Khanabal town, 50 kilometers (30 miles) south of Srinagar, said Lt. Col. V.K. Batra, a defense spokesman. Two other rebels belonging to Lashkar-e-Tayyaba were killed in another gunbattle with soldiers in Zainapora village, 70 kilometers (43 miles) south of Srinagar, Batra said. At least 66,000 people, mostly civilians, have been killed in the insurgency.
