U.S. stocks closed lower Monday ahead of several events later this week that could set the tone for the rest of the summer. The dollar gained ground against the pound, but lost ground versus the euro and the yen. Light sweet crude oil for September delivery dropped 15 cents to $104.55 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Gold futures climbed $6.90 to $1,328.40 an ounce. The Dow Jones industrial average lost 36.86, or 0.24 percent, to 15,521.97. The broader Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 6.32, or 0.37 percent, to 1,685.33. The technology-heavy Nasdaq composite index dropped 14.03, or 0.39 percent, to 3,599.14.
