An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1 occurred near Severnaya Zemlya in the Arctic Ocean overnight to Friday. According to the Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the epicenter of the earthquake was situated at the northern coast of Komsomolets Island, which is part of the archipelago Severnaya Zemlya, at a depth of 10 kilometers under the ocean bottom. An earthquake in the Arctic Ocean is a rather rare phenomenon. Nobody could feel Friday's underground tremor because it occurred far from settlements. Its epicenter was situated about 800 kilometers to the south of the North Pole and 1,500 kilometers to the north of the city of Norilsk, Itar-Tass reported.
