Two earthquakes occurred in Kuriles on Tuesday. The first earthquake with a magnitude of 4.8 and an epicenter near the island of Shikotan war registered in the morning. The second earthquake with a magnitude of 5.5 and an epicenter near the desert island of Simushir on its Pacific side occurred two hours later. According to the information of insular seismologists, three-point tremors were felt in the city of Severo-Kurilsk (Paramushir Island) and two-point tremors in the city of Yuzhno-Kurilsk (Kunashir Island). There are no victims or destructions there. As Itar-Tass learnt at the Kamchatka-based branch of the Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences, an underground tremor was registered at 10.40 Kamchatka time (02.40 Moscow time) on Tuesday. The epicenter of the earthquake was situated 284 kilometers to the south of the city of Severo-Kurilsk at a depth of 59.9 kilometers under the sea bottom. The Kurile Islands are included in the zone of high seismic activity. Earthquakes regularly occur here.
