I am writing with regard to the article "The best man is the best to his wife" (May 9). It is a mystery to me how some men can pray five times a day and then abuse their wives and deprive them of their basic rights. Unfortunately, some of these men are self-proclaimed scholars who misinterpret Islamic teaching to suit their preaching. Islam honors women and preserves their rights, and those who promote the complete supremacy of men over women should really be questioned and held accountable for misleading others to believe that women are second-class human beings. T. Tawfiq, Online response II. Some men (not all) have adopted the teachings of Islam on the exterior, such as wearing a white thobe and having a long beard. But on the inside, faith has not rectified their character, softened their hearts or inspired them to treat their women kindly. Nour, Online response
