An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.0 on the Richter scale shook Simeulue regency in Aceh province, on Sunday at 10.17 am local time, ANTARA reported. Head of the Medan Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Hendra Suwarta said the quake lies 1.33 degrees northern latitude and 91.93 degrees eastern longitude or 484 kilometers southwest of Simeulue, Aceh. Hendra said the quake was an aftershock from the one that shook on Wednesday (April 11) with a 8.5 magnitude. But since the quake had a magnitude of only 5.0 on the Richter scale the trembles did not reach Medan, and obviously did not have a potential for a tsunami. A quake also shook Buol Sitolitoli regency in Central Sulawesi. Earlier, a 8.5 magnitude quake also struck the waters of Sinabang, Simeulue, Aceh province on Wednesday at 3.38 pm local time. The quake lies 410 kilometers west of Sinabang Island, with its epicenter 93.12 degrees eastern longitude and 2.4 degrees northern latitude.
