An earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale shook Simeulue District, Aceh Province, on Wednesday at 10 am Western Indonesian Time (WIB), ANTARA reported. The earthquake's epicenter was located at 2.50 degrees northern latitude and 96.09 degrees eastern longitude, around 30 km northwest of Sinabang (capital of Simeulue District), at a depth of 10 km below sea level, according to Syahnan, head of the Mata Ie meteorological and geophysics office in Aceh Besar, here on Wednesday. There were no immediate reports of casualties or serious damage in the temblor. The Simeulue island group is prone to earthquakes because they are located between a mainland fault and a sea fault.
