The European Union on Thursday pledged 7 million euros (9.2 million dollars) in humanitarian aid for Syria, and backed calls from the International Committee of the Red Cross for "a daily humanitarian truce" in the country, dpa reported. The funds will help Syrian refugees in Lebanon, Turkey, Jordan and Iraq, and is also intended for civilians in the country, provided that humanitarian access is ensured, the EU said in a statement. "A daily humanitarian truce is absolutely vital in order to provide assistance when people are in most dire need of help," EU Humanitarian Aid Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva said. Thursday's decision - which was announced on the eve of an EU foreign ministers' meeting partly devoted to the Syrian crisis - takes total humanitarian assistance from the bloc to 10 million euros.
