Kristalina Georgieva, the European Union's commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response, today visited Romania's flood-stricken eastern region, dpa quoted local media as reporting. Georgieva and Romanian Prime Minister Emil Boc flew over the Sendreni region, at the confluence of the Siret and Danube rivers, according to the Agerpres news agency. In the past two weeks, floods in the country have killed 23 people and left some 18,000 homeless, while causing nearly 60 million euros (76 million dollars) worth of damage. After the Sendreni flight, the two officials visited the Brates and Galati regions, as well as a Belgian-sponsored relief effort provided as part of the Community Civil Protection Mechanism of the EU, Agerpres said. EU member states have begun offering flood aid to Romania as part of the bloc's civilian solidarity mechanism.
