The European Commission on Tuesday launched a 23-million-euro (29-million-dollar) housing programme to mark the two-year anniversary of the earthquake that devastated Haiti, with thousands still homeless, according to dpa. "Half-a-million Haitians live in camps and cholera persists. More importantly, we recognize that Haiti will remain vulnerable to natural disasters," the European Union's humanitarian aid commissioner, Kristalina Georgieva, said in a statement. The housing programme, which will involve local authorities, is meant to provide repaired or rebuilt homes for more than 60,000 displaced people. "Rebuilding the roads, homes, public buildings, schools ... may seem like a Herculean task," said EU Development Commissioner Andris Piebalgs. But he added that Haiti's reconstruction would continue to be "a priority" for the EU, as both sides "share a common ambition for the future of the country."
