The Philippines are set to receive an extra 5 million euros (4.9 million dollars) in aid to help it cope with the destruction wrought by the Ketsana and Parma typhoons in late 2009, the European Commission said today. The natural disaster, which took place between late September and early October last year, affected 10 million people and left more than 700 dead, according to commission estimates. "Tens of thousands of Filipinos are still struggling to rebuild their lives ... given that their situation is still serious today, we are committed to bringing further relief to them through this additional funding," dpa quoted the European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid, Kristalina Georgieva, as saying. The commission, which is the EU's executive, had already allocated 9 million euros to the Philippines in 2009.
