Japanese stocks soared 2.8 per cent Tuesday on overnight rallies on Wall Street and optimism that the European debt problems could be contained. The benchmark Nikkei 225 Stock Average gained 235.82 points, or 2.82 per cent, to 8,609.95 after tumbling 2.17 per cent Monday to the lowest this year. The broader-based Topix index was up 19.70 points, or 2.70 per cent, at 748.55, according to a report of the German Press Agency "DPA".
