Akhir 17, 1432, March 22, 2011, SPA -- The Secretary General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), Prof Dr. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu expressed his deep disappointment and concern about the reports carried by international media regarding the burning of a copy of the Holy Quran by an evangelical Church in U.S. Florida State last Sunday. In a statement issued today, he described the news as shocking, warning against unforeseen and volatile consequences of such outrageous and irresponsible acts that could hurt deep religious sentiments of over 1.5 billion Muslims around the world. The Secretary General characterized the unfortunate incident as the worst example of extremism that the international community has been consistent in condemning, calling upon Muslims all over the world to exercise restraint in the face of this deplorable incident. He reiterated OIC's position on the need for a normative approach to discourage such practices. Prof. Ihsanoglu urged the international political elite to take the necessary steps with a view to avoiding recurrence of such acts of extremism that could inflame religious sentiments with grave repercussions towards interfaith harmony as well as global peace, security and stability.
