The Secretary General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, expressed today satisfaction over the conditions in which Mauritanian elections took place on July 18, 2009, in respect of the conditions and procedures governing the election process, and in accordance with the presidential regulations in the Islamic Republic of Mauritania. In this context, the Secretary General hailed the attachment of the Mauritanian people to the democratic process and their insistence on reinforcing the rule of law and high democratic political awareness. In a press statement issued here this morning, the Secretary General called on all parties to combine their efforts and work together in order to support the democratic process and reinforce stability and overall development in Mauritania. The Secretary General also commended the valuable and dedicated efforts of President Abdoulaye Wade, President of the Republic of Senegal and current Chairman of the OIC Summit, which resulted in the signature of the Dakar Agreement that enabled the return of constitutional legitimacy to Mauritania.
