The Secretary General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference Prof. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu condemned in the strongest possible terms the recent suicide bomb attacks which killed and wounded scores of innocent people in Baghdad. He expressed shock and deep sorrow over the recent tragic loss of lives of civilians, among other incidents, at an informal reconciliation meeting at Al-Yousufiya on Friday 2 January and of innocent pilgrims at Kadhimiya area in Baghdad on Sunday 4 January, 2009. Secretary General Ihsanoglu termed these attacks as abhorrent criminal acts and referred to the OIC Makkah Al Mukarramah Document issued by the OIC sponsored meeting of senior Iraqi Sunni and Shiite scholars, which rejected such acts as contrary to Islamic teachings and its noble values. He appealed to the senior Iraqi religious quarters as well as to all political parties to stand up and unify against violence, division and sectarianism within the spirit of Makkah Al Mukarramah Document.
