An earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale hit the waters off the Bengkulu coast on Sunday morning, ANTARA reported. The epicenter of the quake which struck at 08.16 a.m. was 79 km southeast of Mukomuko, north Bengkulu, at a depth of 10 km, the Meteorology and Geophysics Board (BMG) said. The quake did not have the potential to cause a tsunami, it said. A magnitude 7.9 quake rocked Bengkulu on Sept 12 last year, killing dozens of people and destroying thousands of houses. Since then, earthquakes, most of them measuring less than 4 on the Richter scale, jolted the province almost everyday.
