A moderate earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale hit Krui, Lampung province, on Tuesday at 15.03 west Indonesian time (WIB). According to information from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the temblor's epicenter was located 141 kilometers south of Krui or at 5.46 degrees southern longitude and 103.93 degrees eastern latitude at a depth of 10 kilometers. The earthquake's epicenter was also 155 kilometers southwest of Aliwa (Lampung), 177 kilometers northeast of Ujungkulon (Banten), 187 kilometers southwest of Tanjungkarang (Lampung) and 323 kilometers southwest of Jakarta. On the same day, an earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale jolted Banda Aceh, Aceh's provincial capital, at 9.10 in the morning, according to ANTARA. Still traumatized by the December 26, 2004 magnitude-8.9 earthquake that triggered a devastating tsunami, Tuesday's temblor caused Banda Aceh people to rush out of their homes and office buildings in panic. The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) station at Mata'ie reported that the epicenter of the earthquake was located near the Andaman islands in the Indian Ocean at 10.96 degrees northern latitude and 93.47 degrees eastern longitude at a depth of 10 km below sea level. Meanwhile, an earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale also occurred on Tuesday jolting West Java's Ujungkulon area at 6.13 in the morning. The epicenter of the quake was located 103 km northwest of Ujungkulon. Data obtained from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics office indicated that the earthquake took place at 6.90 degrees southern latitude, -104.56 degrees eastern longitude, at a depth of 18 km. Its epicenter was also about 172 km northwest of Kalianda, Lampung; 180 km northwest of Tanjungkarang, Lampung; 192 km northwest of Merak port in Banten; and 264 km northwest of Jakarta. It had no potential to trigger a tsunami.
