A moderate earthquake jolted Pakistan's capital and the northwest Sunday, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injury, according to AP. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake measured magnitude 4.9 and was centered in the Hindu Kush mountains of neighboring Afghanistan, a sparsely populated region where earthquakes are common. The epicenter was 350 kilometers (220 miles) northwest of Pakistan's northwestern city of Peshawar, said Tahir Hassan, an official at Pakistan's Seismological Center in Peshawar. Residents felt brief tremors in Islamabad, Peshawar and the towns of Kohat and Chitral in North West Frontier Province. Police in Chitral said they had no immediate reports of damage or injuries. In October 2005, a magnitude-7.6 quake devastated Kashmir and northern Pakistan, killing about 80,000 people and leaving hundreds of thousands homeless.
