Stocks ended higher in Tokyo Friday with Japan's key Nikkei index rising above 16,000 on solid overnight gains on Wall Street and a weaker yen, DPA reported. The Nikkei 225 Stock Average surged 306.23 points, or 1.94 per cent, to close at 16,127.42. The broader Topix index of all first-section issues was also up 21.84 points, or 1.43 per cent, at 1,544.71. Exporters, such as Toyota Motor Corp and Canon Inc, led the gains as a weaker yen makes their products cheaper overseas. For the week, however, the Nikkei rose 5.26 points while the Topix was down 0.8 per cent. On currency markets at midday (0300 GMT), the dollar was quoted at 115.00-05 yen, up from Thursday's 5 pm quote of 114.45-48 yen. The euro was quoted at 1.3874-75 dollars, down from Thursday's 5 pm quote of 1.3900-03 dollars, and at 159.55-60 yen, up from 159.12-16 yen.
