A MILD EARTHQUAKE ROCKED NORTHERN INDIA ON SUNDAY BUT THERE WERE NO REPORTS OF DAMAGE OR CASUALTIES, AN OFFICIAL SAID, ACCORDING TO AP. SLIGHT TREMORS WERE FELT IN HIGH RISE BUILDINGS IN NEW DELHI AFTER THE 3.7 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE SHOOK PARTS OF NORTH INDIA LATE SUNDAY, SAID B. LAL, AN OFFICIAL AT THE METEOROLOGICAL DEPARTMENT IN THE INDIAN CAPITAL. THE QUAKE HAD ITS EPICENTER IN JHAJJAR, A SMALL TOWN IN HARYANA STATE, HE SAID. SOME RESIDENTS LIVING IN HIGH RISE APARTMENTS PANICKED AND CAME OUT OF THEIR HOMES, BUT IN MOST PARTS OF THE INDIAN CAPITAL THE TREMORS WERE BARELY FELT. TREMORS FROM SUNDAY'S TEMBLOR WERE ALSO FELT IN THE WESTERN INDIAN STATE OF GUJARAT. GUJARAT WAS DEVASTATED BY A 7.7-MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE IN JANUARY 2001 THAT KILLED MORE THAN 13,000 PEOPLE AND DESTROYED AROUND 1.2 MILLION HOMES.
