A STRONG QUAKE JOLTED SUNDAY THE SOUTHEASTERN IRANIAN PROVINCE OF KERMAN, WITH INITIAL REPORTS SPEAKING OF SOME 80 PEOPLE INJURED, STATE TELEVISION REPORTED. THE QUAKE WITH A MAGNITUDE OF 5.2 DEGREES ON THE RICHTER SCALE SHOOK THE CITY OF ZARAND AND SURROUNDING VILLAGES. TWENTY INJURED HAD TO BE HOSPITALISED, A LOCAL OFFICIAL TOLD THE TELEVISION. SOME BUILDINGS WERE DAMAGED, HE WAS QUOTED AS SAYING BY THE GERMAN NEWS AGENCY "DPA'. ZARAND WAS HIT IN MAY LAST YEAR BY TWO QUAKES OF 6.4 AND 5.4 DEGREES' MAGNITUDE THAT KILLED 612 PEOPLE, INJURED 1,400 AND DESTROYED AROUND 8,000 HOMES.
