At least eight people were drowned when a bus driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to crash into a river in India's northern Uttar Pradesh state on Friday, a local news report said. According to the PTI news agency report carried by Deutsche Presse Agentur (dpa), the accident in Rampur, some 250 kilometres north-west of state capital Lucknow, was caused by poor visibility due to a dense fog. The bus was on its way to Haldwani, one of the main towns in adjoining Uttaranchal state. Senior police officer DC Misra told the news agency that the bodies of eight of the nine passengers in the bus were pulled out of the Peela Khar river. One of the passengers as well as the driver and the conductor of the bus swam to safety, the police said. --SP 21 28 Local Time 18 28 GMT
