At least seven policemen and one civilian were killed when suspected militants stormed a police camp in India's northern state of Uttar Pradesh in the early hours ofTuesday, (dpa) said. Police said two militants armed with automatic rifles and grenades, attacked the Central Reserve Police Force recruitment centre at 2:20 am in Rampur, over 250 kilometres north-west of state capital Lucknow. The militants believed to be wearing police uniforms, first opened fire at the gate of the camp killing two policemen and a rickshaw-puller, senior police officer Sanjiv Gupta told the PTI news agency. They later managed to get to the second post where they killed five more policemen before the police retaliate. Six others were reportedly injured in the attack. The area was cordoned off and teams of the police and the Special Operations Group launched a hunt for the attackers.
