The Palace of Government area is the historical core of the city of Riyadh. One of its landmarks is Almasmak fortress which is a symbol for the establishment of the foundations of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It also represents the heart of the city of Riyadh which embraces the historical and traditional symbols which reflect the spirit of the deep-rooted past. It is also the area on which Riyadh was based when the late King Abdulaziz regained it to start from there the process of unification of most parts of Arabia and the establishment of the Saudi state. It is also the headquarters of government since the start of the second Saudi state and choice of Riyadh by Imam Turki bin Abdullah to be the capital of his government. The Palace of Government area contains Imam Turki bin Abdullah Grand Mosque. Throughout generations, the area has played the role of being a main commercial center for the city.
