Parliamentary and presidential elections began in Romania Sunday with 17.9 million voters eligible to go to the polls. The main candidates for the presidential post were Prime Minister Adrian Nastase of the Social Democrats (PSD) and the mayor of Bucharest, Traian Basescu, who represents the Alliance for Justice and Truth (DA). If as expected none of the 12 candidates receive the absolute majority required, a run-off is scheduled for December 12. In the parliamentary elections 52 parties, alliances and citizens associations are running for positions in the two chambers with the PSD and DA again expected to dominate. Official results are expected Tuesday.
