One U.S. soldier was killed and another wounded when their convoy came under attack Tuesday near a town in central Iraq, the military said. The soldiers were members of the 13th Combat Support Command unit that is responsible for the area of Balad, a town 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of Baghdad. The attack by indirect fire _ referring to mortars or rockets _ took place at 10 a.m. (0700 GMT). The injured soldier was evacuated to a military hospital, the army said. The name of the dead soldier was withheld pending notification of next of kin.
