The Jeddah-based International Islamic Relief Organization (IIRO) has extended more than SR 2 million as urgent assistance to the displaced people in the Sudanese Western Province of Darfur. IIRO's Secretary General Dr Adnan bin Khaleel Basha said this assistance comes in response to appeals made earlier by Sudanese authorities and other international community welfare organizations to confront this situation in Darfur province, and to shoulder responsibility towards the displaced people there. He noted that the IIRO has helped about 2000 families in the province and provided them with foodstuffs including sugar, onion and sauce. He added that the IIRO had worked for the re-settlement of 30,000 displaced people and provided them with food materials, and started to dig wells in some regions that face the problem of water scarcity and provided these wells with pumps. On the other hand, the IIRO has provided the displaced people with tents, and set up a relief plan for providing the displaced people with health services and water.
