The United Nations Human Rights Council saw today a storm of criticism by member states towards human rights violations in Iran. This came during the interactive dialogue with the UN Special Rapporteur on Iran Ahmed Shahid. The United States expressed deep concern over the gloomy situation of human rights in Iran, and the suppression of freedoms as a daily practice in the country. The United States criticized women's rights violations in Iran as well as the restrictions on ethnic minorities, especially Sunnis and Christians. The European Union described the human rights situation in Iran as serious, expressing deep concern over the huge number of executions, calling on the Iranian authorities to stop repression of freedoms and to cooperate with the UN Special Rapporteur by allowing him to visit the country to carry out his mission.
