Germany captain Bastian Schweinsteiger is leaving Bayern Munich after 17 years for Manchester United where he will be reunited with coach Louis van Gaal, Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said on Saturday. Rummenigge told a news conference that the 30-year-old midfielder Schweinsteiger asked for a transfer during a meeting the previous day and that Munich have granted the request and all but finalised a deal with the 20-times English champions United. No details were disclosed but German and English news reports said that the World Cup champion Schweinsteiger will get a three-year contract at Old Trafford. Germany's Bild paper estimated the transfer fee at up to 20 million euros (22.2 million dollars) while England's Manchester Evening News spoke of less than half the sum.
