A bus driver lost control of his vehicle on a sharp curve on a mountain road in eastern India and plunged into a gorge, killing at least 11 people, police said Monday. Twenty-six passengers were injured, some critically, in the accident in Garhwa district of Jharkhand state, police Superintendent Priyadarshi Alok said. He said the bus overturned after it fell. The bus was traveling from Raipur city to the neighboring state of Bihar when the accident occurred. India has the world's deadliest roads, with more than 110,000 people killed annually. Most accidents are blamed on reckless driving, poor road maintenance or aging vehicles.
