A bus plunged into a gorge in mountainous northern India on Monday, killing at least 20 people and injuring 26, an official said. The bus carrying 46 people went off the road as it tried to take a sharp curve, said Iftekhar Ahmad, the area's chief medical officer. It rolled nearly 300 feet (90 meters) into the gorge near Assar, a village 90 miles (150 kilometers) east of Jammu, the winter capital of India's Jammu-Kashmir state, Ahmad said. Twenty-three people were hospitalized in critical condition after the midday accident, he told The Associated Press.
