US President Barack Obama on Tuesday expressed condolences to Germany, Spain, and victims of a jetliner crash in the French Alps. Speaking at a White House news conference with visiting President Ashraf Ghani of Afghanistan, Obama said he spoke to German Chancellor Angela Merkel and planned to telephone Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy later in the day. The U.S. president called the tragedy a "terrible airplane crash" and noted that its victims included children and infants. A Germanwings Airbus A320 carrying 150 people from Barcelona to Dusseldorf crashed in a remote section of southeastern France.
