A Polish spelunker was rescued from a cave in Austria on Saturday after suffering injuries and becoming stuck there earlier in the week, according to dpa. The 27-year-old was pulled out on a stretcher in several stages over 250 metres. Rescue specialist Christian Roither said the man had suffered a thigh injury, a fractured rib and a concussion. "The patient is so far, so good," Salzburg rescue team spokeswoman Maria Riedler said. She said a helicopter had taken him to a hospital. The climber, identified only as Marek G, had fallen several metres down a cliff inside the Jack Daniel's cave in the Austrian Alps on Thursday. The shaft had to be widened at one point to allow the stretcher to pass through, rescuers said. "[The cave] should not be underestimated. One has to fight ahead centimetre by centimetre," rescuer Wolfgang Gadermayr said before the operation was complete. More than 70 rescuers were deployed at the site. Many of them were also involved in the June rescue of an injured German man, who was trapped in the nearby Riesending cave in southern Germany for 11 days.
