Rescue workers on Thursday launched an operation to save a badly injured Polish climber stuck 250 metres below ground in a cave in the Austrian Alps, dpa quoted rescuers as saying. The 27-year-old man had fallen several metres down a cliff inside the Jack Daniel's cave in Salzburg province, sustaining severe leg, hip and chest injuries, mountain rescue officials said. He is in responsive and in stable condition. They said it could take as long as three days to free the man, whose name was given only as Marek G, under Austrian privacy laws. The shaft will have to be widened at one location so that a stretcher can pass through, said Gernot Salzmann of the regional cave rescue service. "[The cave] should not be underestimated. One has to fight ahead centimetre by centimetre," said Wolfgang Gadermayr, another rescuer. More than 70 rescuers were deployed at the site. Many of them were also involved in the rescue of an injured German who was trapped in the nearby Riesending cave in southern Germany for 11 days in June. -- SPA 21:25 LOCAL TIME 18:25 GMT تغريد
