More than 2,000 migrants were rescued from the Mediterranean over the weekend, the Italian navy reported on Monday, according to dpa. Italy is facing a record inflow of migrants by sea - some 100,000 are estimated to have arrived so far this year, compared with fewer than 43,000 in the whole of last year. The navy, which is coordinating the Mare Nostrum search and rescue mission, disembarked 1,698 people in Reggio Calabria, on the tip of Italy's boot. On Sunday, 364 other migrants were taken to Sicily.
