There are three dead among the thousands of migrants being escorted to Italian shores after being rescued from the Mediterranean, reports said Sunday. The ANSA news agency said the three were taken by a Maltese cargo ship to Pozzallo, a coastal town on Sicily's south-eastern tip, along with about 100 migrants. Some of them had suffered burn injuries from the engine of their dinghy, which caught fire. According to dpa, the Italian Navy said on Twitter that vessels taking part in its Mare Nostrum (Our Sea) patrol operations had taken on board 1,889 migrants, some of who were rescued by the Italian and Maltese coast guards. The Italian coast guard said it picked up two pregnant women and their relatives, taking them to the island of Lampedusa. They were on a boat with about 240 migrants, who claimed to come from Somalia and Syria, intercepted in Maltese waters.
