U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel spoke with his Russian counterpart about Moscow's role in violence in eastern Ukraine, and the U.S. defense chief was assured that Russia has no intention of invading Ukraine, the Pentagon said Tuesday. Rear Admiral John Kirby, the chief Pentagon spokesman, told reporters that Hagel expressed concern about Russian-influenced "irregular" military soldiers operating in eastern Ukraine. Kirby said Russian Defense Minister Segei Shoigu expressed a "different view" in a conversation Monday that was at times "terse" but "never uncivil." Hagel was assured twice during the conversation that Moscow does not intend to invade Ukraine, Kirby said.
